2023 Vintage Notes

The season began with historic winter rains… nearly 40 inches in some parts of Paso Robles’ westside. The rain replenished the soil and revitalized the vines after years of drought.

What followed was one of the longest, coolest growing seasons in over a decade. A mild spring and temperate summer with virtually no major heat spikes extended hang time, pushing harvest back by nearly five weeks. For the Willow Creek District, this slow, steady ripening was ideal, yielding fruit with electric natural acidity, deep color extraction, and remarkably supple tannins.

For the G2 and G2 North vineyards, this translated into a vintage of incredible balance. The wines are characterized by high-toned aromatics and a vibrant mineral tension, proving that with ample water and cooler temperatures, Paso Robles produces wines of both immense power and refined elegance. It is a vintage that captures the purest expression of our rocky, limestone soils.

What to Expect in the Glass: Because of the cooler conditions, the grapes retained a distinct natural brightness that keeps the wines exceptionally fresh and alive on the palate. The extended season allowed the tannins to ripen fully without soaring sugar levels, resulting in a final profile that is powerful, sophisticated, and beautifully balanced.
